One of the Most Beautiful Chapels in the World

Pretty Place Chapel, also known as the Fred W. Symmes Chapel, is one of the most beautiful chapels I’ve ever been in. It sits on a cliff with long-range, sweeping mountain views in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is owned by the YMCA Camp Greenville. It sits at roughly 3,200 feet in elevation in Cleveland, South Carolina; however, it is very close to North Carolina and some of the most iconic waterfalls in the Southeast and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

If you’re planning a wedding here, you will need to be aware that there are very specific booking protocols. With opening dates to book your date each year requiring strict planning and coordination with the YMCA, we can help guide you through all of this and you can find detailed information about booking here.

The views are simply amazing. I don’t think I can express that enough. As a photographer, I don’t know of a more beautiful chapel with long-range mountain views in the world. The closest thing I can think of is the Chapel of the Transfiguration in Grand Tetons National Park near Moose Junction, but that chapel is not open-air.

An Open-Air Chapel on the Edge of Everything

Pretty Place Chapel is an open-air, stone-and-beam chapel that sits right on the edge of the Blue Ridge Escarpment. There are no walls. There is no glass. Just stone columns, wooden beams, and a panoramic view of the South Carolina Upstate that stretches out for what feels like forever. A wooden cross sits at the front on a rock base, and above it reads “I Will Lift Up My Eyes to the Hills… Psalm 121:1.”

The chapel seats 350 to 400 guests. The center aisle is about 5 and a half feet wide and runs roughly 66 feet from the back to the cross, with 16 stone steps leading down to the front. There are dressing rooms for both the bride and groom, and the YMCA provides a basic sound system you can rent for $125.

It is technically in South Carolina, but it is very accessible from the North Carolina side.

What it does not have is a reception space. There is no catering, no food allowed on the grounds, and no on-site facilities for a reception. You will need to plan your reception at a separate venue. We cover some recommendations for that later on this page.

The DuPont State Forest Advantage

If you are planning a wedding or elopement at Pretty Place Chapel and you are staying in North Carolina, there are some very amazing photo opportunities off-site on the way back to Brevard, Asheville, or Hendersonville. We are talking waterfalls, long-range views, and covered bridges. It is just a wonderful opportunity to get some amazing wedding photography on the way back that most people will never have access to in DuPont State Recreational Forest.

If you are staying in Brevard or headed back to Asheville and you are willing to risk getting a little bit wet, you could do High Falls or Looking Glass Falls in Pisgah National Forest. Both are on the way back, but to get to the base of the waterfall can mean you possibly get wet. There are also other waterfalls where the risk of getting wet is much, much lower.

This is something we specifically build into our packages because we know the trails, we know which waterfalls look best at which times of year, and we know how to get you in and out without destroying your dress or your timeline. Most photographers showing up to Pretty Place for the first time have no idea DuPont is 15 minutes away.

Why Pretty Place Chapel Is Perfect for Elopements

If you are considering an elopement at Pretty Place Chapel, I think it is honestly the best way to experience this venue from a photography standpoint.

With a full wedding, you are managing 300+ guests, a tight two-hour window, and a shot list that has to move fast. With an elopement, all of that pressure disappears. It is just you, your partner, maybe a handful of your closest people, and one of the most incredible backdrops in the Southeast.

The weekday pricing is a big advantage here. Monday through Thursday, the two-hour block is $2,500 compared to $3,200 on weekends. And with fewer people to coordinate, the timeline works in your favor. You have more flexibility to chase the best light, to wait out a fog bank, or to take your time with portraits instead of rushing through them.

The vibe of a 10-person elopement in an open-air chapel on a mountainside is completely different from a 300-person wedding. It is quieter. It is more intimate. And photographically, it gives us so much more room to work. We can move around the chapel, find angles that would be impossible with rows of guests, and really let the venue do what it does best.

The elopement timeline also pairs perfectly with the DuPont adventure session. A sunrise ceremony at Pretty Place followed by a waterfall session at DuPont is, in my opinion, one of the most unique and photogenic experiences you can have anywhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Nobody else is really offering this combination, and the variety of images you walk away with is unlike anything a single venue can provide.

Full Weddings at Pretty Place Chapel

A full wedding at Pretty Place Chapel is an experience like no other venue. You have this massive open-air chapel with 350 to 400 seats, a 66-foot aisle with 16 stone steps leading down to the cross, and a mountain view behind it that makes every single guest stop and stare the moment they walk in.

There are dressing rooms for the bride and groom. The bride’s room is 10 by 15 with a full wall mirror, vanity, and a bench. The groom’s room is 10 by 12 with a mirror, bench, and its own restroom. They are functional, but they are small and there is no natural light. If you can show up fully dressed, I would recommend it.

The Timeline

Weddings are scheduled in minimum two-hour blocks, and that two hours includes everything. Setup, ceremony, family photos, couples portraits, and tear-down. You cannot get in early, and you must leave exactly on time. The YMCA is strict about this because they often have events booked back to back. Most couples allow about 30 minutes for setup and getting situated, run their ceremony, and then have roughly 30 minutes for photos and clearing out.

That is a tight window. And this is where working with a photographer who has shot at Pretty Place before really matters. We know exactly where the best spots are for family group shots on those steps. We know how to cycle through a bridal party efficiently with that backdrop. And most importantly, we have a workaround for the time crunch. Through our DuPont State Forest adventure session, we can take the pressure off the ceremony window entirely. Your family photos and couples portraits can happen at waterfalls and mountain views just 15 minutes away. That means your ceremony time is about the ceremony, not about rushing through a shot list. For guests who may have accessibility issues or cannot hike trails, we also know which DuPont locations are easily accessible by car.

Wedding season at Pretty Place runs mid-March through November, and winter weddings are booked December through mid-March. These dates book out well in advance. The YMCA opens reservations on a specific date each year, and if you are not ready on that day, you will likely miss your preferred date.

One important detail: Pretty Place Chapel is physically located in Greenville County, South Carolina. You will need a South Carolina marriage license. Any licensed minister or Notary Public in South Carolina may conduct the ceremony. The address for your marriage license is 100 YMCA Camp Road, Cleveland, SC 29635.

How to Book Pretty Place Chapel

You book Pretty Place directly through YMCA Camp Greenville. No third-party vendor can book it for you.

Proposals at Pretty Place Chapel

So you have two options here, and the first thing to know is that you can propose at Pretty Place Chapel without paying any type of fee. The chapel is open to the public during daylight hours when it is not reserved for a private event. If you want the place locked down just for you, you can pay the reservation fee and the YMCA will close it off for a private experience.

Option 1: Book the facility. If the date is available, you can reserve it and have a private, stunning proposal all to yourself. No strangers, no interruptions.

Option 2: Use the public access hours. Just make sure the YMCA has that date open on their visitation schedule and show up. Depending on the time of day, the time of year, and the day of the week, you may have the place completely to yourself or it may be packed. There is no real way to tell.

How We Handle Proposal Photography

Cell phone service in the area can be spotty for the last stretch of the drive. What we do is if you have an iPhone, we share locations with each other using Find My so you can track my location in real time and I can track your location in real time. That gives you a piece of comfort knowing that I am already there and in place and you can see it on your iPhone without text messaging or anything else. It also allows me to track you and know if you are running 20 minutes behind so we are not sitting there panicking.

We also wear something that is very easy to spot so when you walk in, you will know where we are. We will be hiding our cameras as to not give it away. We also ask that you send us a photo the morning of if you can get one of both of you, that is ideal. That way we will know what you are wearing and what to look for. If not, we can just take one of you so we know what you are wearing and you are easy to spot.

Positioning is very important for proposal photography as we want to be able to see both of your faces. If one of your backs is to us, it kind of changes the whole feel of the photos. We will go over positioning in detail with you.

Sunrise offers amazing, cinematic, dramatic, epic mountain long-range views with god ray potential photos you could ever ask for. It also comes with some risk that we cover in the lighting guide below. The advantage of doing a proposal is we can take an educated guess the day before, if you are flexible, and pick our timing a little bit better based on what the weather says. This extra added flexibility that weddings and elopements at Pretty Place Chapel don’t necessarily have allows us to get the best possible photos.

This kind of coordination is what separates a proposal where the photographer nails every moment from one where they miss the actual knee-drop because they were in the wrong spot. We have done this enough times to know exactly how to position, how to stay hidden, and how to read the moment so we are clicking at the right time.

The Pretty Place + DuPont Adventure Session

For your proposal or elopement, we can offer an amazing guided photo session through DuPont State Forest and ending in Pisgah National Forest. We can hit a large variety of waterfalls, including High Falls, Triple Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls in DuPont State Forest. In addition to finishing at Looking Glass Falls in Pisgah National Forest, we will also see a wide range of mountain panoramic views, mountain lakes, balsam forest, and rock formations that make for some very unique photos.

The beauty of this is there are so many different areas. Different things will be looking good at different times of the year. Your photo shoot will not look like everyone else’s because you will have such a wide variety of choices for after the proposal or after the ceremony. DuPont State Forest is approximately fifteen minutes away. That is it. And we have access to the waterfalls where The Hunger Games was filmed, or the waterfalls where The Last of the Mohicans was filmed.

Waterfall Hike & Adventure Portraits
High Falls, Triple Falls, Bridal Veil Falls. The contrast between the formal chapel and getting into the water at a waterfall creates a story no single venue can tell.

The contrast is what makes this so special. You start with the formal, structural beauty of the chapel and that massive mountain view, and then 15 minutes later you are standing in a waterfall getting photos that look like they belong in a movie. The variety in a single session is something most couples never get from any single venue.

We know these trails. We know which waterfalls are running well at which times of year. We know which spots are accessible for people in wedding attire and which ones require some adventurous footing. This is not something you can just Google and figure out on the day of.

Understanding the Light at Pretty Place

Being an open-air chapel means we also have to deal with nature and the light. If you want the best possible photos, you have to take lighting into consideration. I see it mentioned over and over again that the best lighting at Pretty Place Chapel is for sunrise. And that is absolutely true for a beautiful sunrise and just stunning views for the human eye. However, for photography, sunrise can be a blessing, or it can be some of the trickiest lighting possible to deal with at Pretty Place Chapel.

For wedding photography, this is largely a non-issue. Most weddings take place later in the day, and by that time the sun has moved completely behind the chapel, putting that stunning mountain view in beautifully even light.

Sunrise Scenarios

Let’s go over a few different scenarios for lighting for an elopement or proposal photography early in the morning. The sunrise is almost directly behind the cross, depending on the time of the year. Some people call this the Lion King sunrise. Regardless of what you call it, it has the opportunity to produce some of the most dramatic and cinematic photos, videos, or just scenes you’ve ever seen.

🌄
The Best Case
What you hope for are some low-lying clouds in the mountains so they sit lower than the peaks, creating mountain ridges that rise above the clouds. You also hope that there are some clouds in the sky to break up the sunlight, which causes these rays to come out behind the clouds, which we often call god rays. This will make for absolutely stunning photos and one of the most beautiful scenes you will ever see in your life.
☀️
The Harsh Reality
On the other side of that coin is you get there and there is not a single cloud in the sky. No low-lying clouds, no clouds breaking up the sun, and what you get is a very bright backlight which makes it very difficult to evenly light the scene. You will be silhouetted most likely. A professional photographer can work with flash, but this is a place of worship so using flash at sunrise is not always ideal. There is generally a middle ground where you can say, “I just want two or three photos of the important moments with a flash and we can deal with the rest.”
⛈️
The Storm Window
We live in what is basically a deciduous rainforest. The weather can change quickly. Being a little bit flexible on your start time will allow you to maneuver in between a storm and not a storm. Those god rays can happen during a storm. Don’t panic if you see storms on the forecast. You may end up getting epic lighting, cloud cover, and views. And if you are really lucky, maybe even a rainbow.
🌧️
The Bad
I have been there and shot a wedding where we had less than 4 feet of visibility due to storms. It is a mountainside cliff and the storms roll in fast and the rain comes in hard and often sideways. This was not a freak storm; it was a normal mountain storm. They happen; it can happen. If you don’t want to deal with mountain storms, I really suggest picking an indoor venue.
🌫️
The Fog
I have also been there for sunrise where fog has absolutely destroyed visibility. You need the fog sitting lower on the mountains. If it comes up the mountains, you will have limited visibility. The fog will burn off if you are a little bit flexible, generally within 15 to 30 minutes. I honestly think on days without many clouds, shooting 30 to 45 minutes after sunrise may offer better light than sunrise itself.
This is the kind of thing that only comes from experience. Knowing when to push for sunrise and when to recommend waiting 30 minutes is the difference between fighting the light and working with it. We have shot here enough to read the conditions and make that call in real time.

Pro Tips for a Flawless Day

📱 Cell Service
Cell reception is highly unreliable on the mountain. Have all guests download offline maps before driving up. Coordinate timing in advance because you will not be able to text or call for the last 30 minutes of the drive.
🛣️ The Drive
The last stretch is steep switchbacks on a narrow mountain road that can take over 15 minutes to navigate. If you or your guests are sensitive to motion, plan accordingly. This is not a highway drive.
👰 The Bridal Suite
There is a room to get dressed, but it is small with no natural light. The bride’s room is 10 by 15 and the groom’s room is 10 by 12. If you can arrive fully dressed, we recommend it.
🅿️ Parking
Limited to about 75 to 85 vehicles. For larger weddings, seriously consider carpooling or renting a shuttle. Guests can park on both sides of the road, but it fills up fast.
📅 Visitation Schedule
The chapel is open to the public during daylight hours when not reserved. The schedule is released only two weeks in advance. Always check: campgreenville.org/visitation-schedule
🌀 Hurricane Helene Update
As of late February 2026, Pretty Place Chapel is in great shape and is open. While our area was deeply impacted by Hurricane Helene, Pretty Place Chapel did well.

Nearby Reception Venues & Accommodations

Since Pretty Place does not allow receptions on the grounds, you are going to need a plan for after the ceremony. Where you hold your reception really depends on the size of your wedding and where your guests are staying.

If ease of access to Pretty Place is your top priority, we highly recommend staying in the Brevard area. Brevard is only about 18 miles away and around 32 minutes of drive time, which is a huge advantage if you are doing an early morning ceremony.

For elopements and micro weddings, the DuPont Yurts are an incredible option. They are ridiculously close to the forest, and honestly, those yurts are nicer than many houses I have been in. You can basically walk to Lake Imaging or Triple Falls from there. It is an amazing home base for a weekend elopement experience.

If you want to do something a little adventurous and you like horses, Shoal Creek is nearby and offers trail rides that allow you to access waterfalls in DuPont that are a little trickier to get to, like Wintergreen Falls. That is a genuinely unique experience you are not going to find many places.

If your wedding is on the larger side for Pretty Place Chapel, I highly recommend having your reception in Asheville. You will have more choices with a wider range of vendors. Asheville is really geared towards the wedding industry more than Brevard, Hendersonville, or Greenville. The drive from Pretty Place to Asheville is about an hour and 10 minutes, which is very doable with a cocktail hour planned at the reception venue to give everyone time to arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book a weekday (Monday through Thursday) two-hour block for $2,500 instead of the weekend rate of $3,200. That saves you $700 right off the top. With an elopement, you typically do not need additional hours, a rehearsal, or the sound system, which keeps costs down even further.
No. There are no on-site reception facilities, no food or catering is allowed on the grounds, and alcohol is strictly prohibited. You will need to plan your reception at a separate venue. We recommend Brevard for convenience or Asheville for a wider range of vendor options.

Plan to arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes before sunrise. The drive up the mountain takes longer than you expect, especially in the dark, and cell service drops out for the last stretch.
