DuPont State Recreational Forest covers 12,500 acres between Brevard and Hendersonville in Transylvania County, famously known as the Land of Waterfalls. The forest holds six major waterfalls, two exposed granite summits with long-range mountain views, five mountain lakes, a rustic covered bridge, and more than 80 miles of trail. It is open daily from 5 AM to 10 PM. Admission is free. It is roughly 50 minutes south of Asheville, an hour from Greenville, SC, and under three hours from Charlotte.

I have been photographing proposals and engagements at DuPont for more than a decade. As a surprise proposal photographer based in the Asheville area, I know which waterfall catches the best morning light. I know which trail empties out by 4 PM on a Tuesday. I know where to stand at Triple Falls so the mist catches the backlight without fogging your partner's glasses. If you are trying to figure out where to propose in North Carolina, this guide is everything I have learned, laid out so you can plan the session or surprise proposal of a lifetime.

◆ What Most People Miss

DuPont is also a Hollywood filming location. The Hunger Games and The Last of the Mohicans were both filmed here, and the specific waterfalls where those iconic scenes took place are the same ones available for your proposal or engagement session. More on the film connections below.

Location Profiles

Every Waterfall, Broken Down for Your Session

Each waterfall offers something different. Below is the honest assessment I give my own clients: the specs, the photography considerations, crowd patterns, and the specific strategies that work for proposals versus portrait sessions.

01

Triple Falls — Upper & Mid Platform

The iconic composition. The most photographed spot in the forest.

Photo Wide shot of couple on the mid-level granite platform, upper two tiers cascading behind them

Why This Location Works

The mid-level viewing area is the single most popular engagement photo composition at DuPont, and it earns that reputation. A large, flat granite platform sits between the upper two tiers and the dramatic lower cascade. You have room to move and room to breathe. The water frames you on both sides, creating intimacy despite the grand scale. A staircase from the main trail descends to this platform. The rock surface is stable enough for dress shoes (never heels on granite). A cable barrier marks the edge toward the lower falls. Stay behind it.

☼ Best Time

Overcast or cloudy days produce the best waterfall photos here. No canopy overhead means harsh midday shadows. Your best windows are before 9 AM (soft diffused light in the gorge) or late afternoon when the sun drops behind the ridge.

★ Pro Tip

Weekday mornings. Period. This is the most visited spot in DuPont. Over one million visitors per year, and a huge percentage end up right here. For a surprise proposal, someone walking into your shot at the exact moment of the knee-drop is not hypothetical. It happens. If it must be a weekend, arrive by 7:30 AM.

Best Seasons

Fall: Peak color (late October/early November) is the showstopper. Gold and red canopy frames the falls. Spring: Highest water volume. Winter: The secret weapon, bare trees, possible ice, almost no crowds. Summer: Longest shooting windows, heaviest traffic.

⚠ Rules

The staircase to the platform is steep. Wet stairs after rain are slippery. Do not climb on waterfalls. Do not enter the water above the falls. People die at waterfalls in this area every year. DuPont posts those warnings for a reason.

Photo Couple at the base of the lower cascade, looking up at the full height of Triple Falls

Most visitors go to the mid-level platform, take their photos, and leave. The lower base requires a short spur trail descent and some rock navigation, which naturally filters out the crowd. Down here, you are looking up at the full dramatic height of the lower cascade, and the sound of the water creates an immersive, almost private atmosphere even when the platform above has 20 people on it.

★ Pro Tip

This is my top recommendation for proposals that need both drama and privacy. Lead your partner down from the main trail. Position them facing the falls. I shoot from multiple angles, including a profile composition with the full cascade running the height of the frame behind you. On a busy weekend, the platform might have 20-30 people. The base below might have three.

☂ Weather Note

Mist from the falls can be significant during high water. Great for dramatic atmosphere. Means hair and clothing will get damp. The footing is uneven and slippery when wet. Not suitable for mobility concerns or very formal attire.

03

Bridal Veil Falls

The most romantic name in the forest. A 4.4-mile commitment that earns every step.

Photo Couple at the base of Bridal Veil Falls, granite veil of water sliding behind them
Photo Fall color on the approach trail

The name sells itself. But the waterfall backs up the name. The upper section drops off a 4-foot overhanging granite ledge, and the lower section spreads into a long, thin sheet of water that slides down smooth granite, looking exactly like a bridal veil trailing down the rock. It empties into a pool at the base where flat rocks provide stable ground for portraits.

The 2+ mile hike naturally filters out casual visitors. You will see far fewer people here than at Triple Falls. The trail passes the covered bridge, three lakes, and a horse barn along the way, all of which extend an engagement session into a full storytelling experience.

◆ What Most People Miss

Mountain bikes. The entire route is bikeable and there is a bike rack at the observation area. Ride in wearing hiking clothes, change at the falls, shoot the portraits, change back, ride out. Cuts travel time roughly in half and adds adventure to the story.

⚠ Safety

The rocks along the sides of Bridal Veil Falls are extremely slippery when wet. Multiple injuries have occurred here over the years. Use extreme caution if you venture beyond the observation area, and never climb on wet rock surfaces near any waterfall. When the granite is wet, it becomes dangerously slick with almost no warning.

Best Seasons

Spring is when Bridal Veil is at its most dramatic, the highest water volume makes the veil effect wider and more pronounced. Fall is spectacular because the approach trail passes through some of the most colorful hardwood forest in DuPont.

04

High Falls & The Covered Bridge

The tallest waterfall in DuPont, paired with the most underused photo location in the forest.

PhotoCouple framed inside the covered bridge, river visible through the far opening
PhotoHigh Falls overlook portrait, 150-ft cascade behind

High Falls and the covered bridge work best as a two-part location. The waterfall is the tallest in DuPont, but the main overlook views it from across the gorge, making the couple appear small. That works for sweeping environmental portraits but less for intimate romantic framing.

◆ What Most People Miss

The covered bridge is one of the most underused photo locations in the entire forest. This rustic timber structure spans the Little River directly above the brink of High Falls. Built in 2000 for a luxury development that was blocked when the state used eminent domain to preserve the land. The bridge survived as beautiful Appalachian craftsmanship. Interior framing, warm wood tones, and the river visible through both openings create a naturally romantic composition. Only 0.35 miles from parking.

★ Pro Tip

I frequently use the covered bridge as the opening act: bridge portraits while light is warming up, then High Falls overlook for the environmental shots, then downstream to Triple Falls for the main event. The trail connects all three seamlessly.

There is also a picnic shelter overlook above High Falls that most visitors walk right past. It provides an elevated angle on the full 150-foot cascade and is a perfect spot for a quiet moment after the proposal.

05

Hooker Falls

Six minutes from the parking lot. When accessibility matters most.

Height ~12 ft (wide, full-river) Distance ~0.4 mi (new trail) Gain Slight elevation gain Parking Hooker Falls (large, restrooms) Note New trail is longer/rerouted vs. the old direct path

★★★★★

Hooker Falls is the most accessible waterfall at DuPont by a wide margin. The newer trail from the parking area is a bit longer and rerouted compared to the old direct path, with a slight elevation gain, but it is still a short, well-maintained walk that most people handle easily. There is an observation deck at the falls. The falls are short but wide, spanning the entire Little River and dropping into a deep swimming pool.

⚡ Quick Answer

When should you choose Hooker Falls? When your partner has mobility concerns. When elderly family members are hiding nearby for the surprise reveal. When time is extremely tight. When the proposal plan requires minimal physical exertion. It delivers a waterfall backdrop without asking anything difficult of anyone.

Summer engagement sessions are where Hooker shines brightest. The swimming pool opens up playful "splash in the water" compositions that the other waterfalls do not safely allow. This is the only waterfall in DuPont where water-play photos are practical and safe.

06

Wintergreen Falls

DuPont's best-kept secret. Maximum privacy, intimate scale.

Photo Intimate engagement portrait on the boulders at the base of Wintergreen Falls, rhododendron framing

Wintergreen is my go-to when a client says privacy is their top priority. It sits on the opposite side of the forest from the main waterfall corridor, accessed from the Guion Farm parking area rather than the Hooker Falls or High Falls lots. That geographic separation means a fraction of the foot traffic.

The falls are intimate in scale. A 20-foot main drop with a 10-foot slide below, separated by a swimming hole. Boulders at the base serve as natural seating for the kind of relaxed, close-together compositions that feel genuine rather than posed. Rhododendron and wintergreen ground cover provide a lush, green frame year-round.

★ Pro Tip

Safest bet for a surprise proposal when you cannot risk other people being present. On a weekday, you will very likely have the entire waterfall to yourself. I have the couple sit on a boulder facing the falls, and the proposal happens in what feels like their own private corner of the forest. The sound of the water masks ambient trail noise.

◆ What Most People Miss

Starting from Guion Farm puts you immediately adjacent to the only approved ceremony location in DuPont. If a couple falls in love with Wintergreen during their engagement and returns for an elopement, the Guion Farm Picnic Shelter is right there. Geographic continuity becomes a meaningful part of their story.

07

Grassy Creek Falls is a water slide down a shallow granite slab. Primary viewing is from the top looking down, which creates an awkward composition for couple portraits. I include it for completeness, but I do not recommend it as a primary location. Where it works: as a bonus stop on a session that already covers the covered bridge and High Falls. The quiet trail along Grassy Creek provides pleasant walk-together compositions between featured locations.

Not sure which waterfall fits your plan? I will help you choose the right spot, plan around the light and the crowds, and capture every moment.

Let's Talk About Your Session
Beyond the Water

Granite Summits & Hidden Gems

DuPont is not just waterfalls. Two exposed granite summits offer long-range mountain views that rival anything on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Cedar Rock

Trail 4.5 mi loop Summit 3,074 ft Gain ~300 ft Surface Exposed granite slabs

My top recommendation for couples who want mountain views over waterfalls. The summit is a massive granite plateau that stretches for acres. Unlike sharp cliff edges at many Blue Ridge overlooks, Cedar Rock has a gradual, open expanse. You can stand on the summit with panoramic views without stomach-dropping vertigo. Ideal for couples where one partner is nervous about heights, or sessions with young children.

☼ Best Time

Sunset. The western-facing exposure means the last light washes across the granite in warm gold. Lead your partner to the edge of the view, turn around, and the entire Blue Ridge is behind you when you drop to one knee.

PhotoSunset engagement portrait on Cedar Rock granite, panoramic mountain views behind the couple

Stone Mountain

Trail 2.65 mi round trip Summit 3,620 ft (highest in DuPont) Views 180-degree panoramic

The highest point in DuPont. More dramatic and more exposed than Cedar Rock, with steeper granite faces and a stronger sense of being on top of the world. For proposals, sunrise is the magic hour. Early light sweeps across granite, valleys fill with mist, and you are likely completely alone at the top.

The Lakes & The Airstrip

DuPont holds five mountain lakes (Julia, Dense, Alford, Fawn, and Lake Imaging). Calm water creates natural reflections for environmental portraits. Low foot traffic, peaceful, private. The old emergency airstrip is a wide clearing with mountain views and a haunting, atmospheric quality, especially in morning fog. Near where The Hunger Games fire scenes were filmed. A niche location for couples with an adventurous or editorial aesthetic.

Where Katniss Found Peeta & Hawkeye Promised to Find Cora

DuPont is not just another waterfall destination. Two generations of moviegoers already know these waterfalls by sight, even if they have never been to North Carolina.

The Hunger Games (2012)

The forest served as the arena for the 74th Hunger Games. Triple Falls is where Katniss finds the camouflaged Peeta at the base of the waterfall. Bridal Veil Falls is where she plunges into the pool after the Gamemakers' firestorm. The fire scenes were filmed along Camp Summit Road near the old airstrip.

For couples who grew up with Suzanne Collins' books or watching Jennifer Lawrence bring Katniss to life, getting engaged at the exact spot where two characters fought to survive together carries a resonance most engagement locations cannot match.

The Last of the Mohicans (1992)

Before The Hunger Games, DuPont was the wilderness backdrop for Michael Mann's frontier epic starring Daniel Day-Lewis. The Mohican party navigates upstream through the forest, negotiating Triple Falls. Hooker Falls is where their canoes plunge over the cascade. And at Bridal Veil Falls, Hawkeye and Cora take shelter behind the waterfall.

★ The Line

"You stay alive. I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far. I will find you."

For couples who love that film, proposing at Bridal Veil Falls carries the emotional weight of that promise. A waterfall named "Bridal Veil" where a man swore he would cross any distance to return to the woman he loved.

Timing Your Session

Seasonal Photography Guide

Spring

March - May

Wildflowers emerge. Canopy fills with vibrant green. Waterfalls at peak flow. Crowds manageable on weekdays.

Best for: Waterfall sessions. Bridal Veil at its most dramatic.

Watch for: Afternoon thunderstorms, mud on narrow trails, pollen in late April/May.

Summer

June - August

Full canopy. Longest daylight. Swimming at Hooker Falls pool. July and August are the busiest months.

Best for: Early morning or golden hour. Playful swimming shots at Hooker.

Watch for: Heavy crowds, heat/humidity, afternoon storms.

Fall

September - November

Peak color hits late October into early November. DuPont's lower elevation means color arrives 1-2 weeks after the high ridgelines. October is one of the three busiest months.

Best for: Peak leaf color at waterfalls. Cedar Rock sunset. Book early.

Winter

December - February

Bare trees open dramatic views. Crowds nearly vanish. Possible ice formations on waterfalls. Shortest daylight hours.

Best for: Solitude, moody atmosphere, bare-tree summit views.

Watch for: Icy trails (critical safety), narrow golden hour window.

JT Julie's Notes

Even when it rains, you can get some of the most amazing, romantic photos. People often leave the trails when it starts to drizzle, which means you get the waterfalls practically to yourself. The lighting goes soft and even, the mist adds atmosphere, and everything looks lush and cinematic. Some of our favorite engagement galleries have come from sessions where clients almost canceled because of the forecast. Trust the process.

The Practical Details

Permits & Logistics

Commercial Use Permit

For professional sessions

$81/year + $5/person. 2026 window: Dec 1, 2025 through Sept 15, 2026. Processing: 30-40 business days. I handle this for all my clients.

Film/Photo Shoot Permit

Large productions only

$760/day minimum. For film crews and large-scale commercial shoots. A standard engagement session with a single photographer does NOT fall into this category.

⚠ Critical Distinction

Ceremonies vs. Portraits. Weddings, elopements, and ceremonies are only permitted at the Guion Farm Picnic Shelter and surrounding meadows. Ceremonies are explicitly not allowed at any of the waterfalls. However, portrait photography and proposal photography at the waterfalls are separate activities from a ceremony. You can absolutely propose at Triple Falls. You cannot hold a wedding ceremony there.

Parking Strategy

All lots are free but fill fast on weekends. Arrive by 9 AM, or much earlier for morning sessions. Guion Farm and Fawn Lake lots are smaller but less congested. No lots can be reserved.

☂ Cell Service

Unreliable in many areas. Plan your meeting point and session timeline before you arrive. Download trail maps to your phone while you still have data. I confirm exact logistics with clients the day before.

Forest Rules That Affect Your Session

No drones (state law). Pets must be leashed (physical leash at all times). No alcohol. Leave No Trace: pack out everything you bring in. Do not move rocks, disturb moss or lichen, or leave materials behind.

Getting Ready

Planning Your Session

What to Wear

⚡ Quick Answer

Footwear is the most important decision. Leave stilettos at home. Trails are gravel and dirt, waterfall platforms are granite, and you are walking at minimum a half mile. Boots, sturdy wedges, or nice flats. Bring portrait shoes in a bag and change at the location if needed.

JT Julie's Notes

Wearing the right shoes can make or break a proposal or engagement session at DuPont State Forest. I have seen partners in heels trying to navigate the stairs at Triple Falls, and it turns what should be a magical moment into a stressful one. Bring comfortable shoes for the trail and tuck your portrait shoes into a small bag. We will find the perfect moment to swap them out. I walk every client through this during our planning call.

For clothing, think about fabrics that move. Flowing dresses, lightweight layers, natural fabrics. Avoid busy patterns and neon. Solid colors in warm neutrals (cream, blush, sage, dusty blue, burgundy) complement the forest palette without competing with it.

What to Bring

Water (no fountains in the forest), sunscreen, bug spray in summer, rain layer in spring/summer, trail map downloaded to your phone. For proposals: carry the ring in a secure, zippered pocket. Not a loose coat pocket on a trail with rocks and tree roots.

How Long to Plan For

Single waterfall: 60-90 minutes of shooting + trail time. Multi-location (bridge + High Falls + Triple Falls): 2-2.5 hours total. Adding Bridal Veil or a summit: 3-4 hours. I build the timeline around the light, the locations, and your comfort level. We never rush.
