What Makes This Different

An Adventure Engagement Session Is Not a Photoshoot with Trees in the Background

It is a 2 to 8 hour experience where you and your partner hike to a location most photographers will never go, do something you actually enjoy together, and walk away with images that look and feel like you. No studio. No park bench. No awkward posing in front of a generic backdrop.

We designed our adventure sessions around a simple idea: if the day would be worth doing even without a camera, the photos will be incredible. That means the hike, the views, the brewery stop afterward, the moment you reach a ridgeline and the entire Blue Ridge opens up in front of you. Those are the moments we capture. Not manufactured smiles. Real ones.

Quick Answer

An adventure engagement session replaces the traditional 1-hour park shoot with a half-day or full-day experience. You hike to a stunning location, do activities you love, and we capture the whole thing. Sessions run 2 to 8 hours depending on the terrain and the experience you want to build.

The Experience

Why Couples Choose Adventure Over Traditional

Traditional engagement sessions last about an hour. You stand in front of nice scenery and a photographer tells you where to put your hands. It works. But it does not create a memory.

Adventure engagement sessions give you something to do together. When you are hiking a ridge or laughing because the wind nearly took your hat, you forget the camera is there. That is when we get the real shots. The ones that make you stop scrolling three years from now because you can feel the moment again.

What Most People Miss

An adventure engagement session doubles as a trial run if you are considering an adventure elopement later. You experience what it is like working with us on a trail, in changing light, with real logistics, before committing to your wedding day.

What Couples Say

We Do Not Ask for Reviews. People Just Write Them.

★★★★★

"As I was planning a proposal in an area I had never visited, Julie was phenomenal at making sure I knew where to go and how to make sure our special moment would be captured perfectly. She shared videos of how to get to the location and even offered tips and tricks for how to get a great photo. Our proposal photos could not have been in better hands. We had a great time at the photo shoot afterward. Hands-down the best customer service I could have ever asked for on a pretty big day!"

Eddie Acheson

★★★★★

"Julie and Will are top notch! Julie eased all my worries talking through how the process would work, and let me tell you... she's got this thing down to a science! I proposed at the top of John Rock (had never hiked it before), Julie essentially mapped out the hike for me and made the process as easy as possible. Our pictures turned out great and have been getting raving feedback from all our friends and family."

Nic Lash

★★★★★

"Julie and Will of Forge Mountain Photography are the most professional and talented team I have ever worked with. They knew exactly what needed to happen to ensure the photos were stunning. Julie provided me with detailed instructions up to the day of the proposal. Will directed everything once the proposal was completed and we started the engagement pics. I recommend them with my highest endorsement."

Golden hour on a mountain ridgeline does not wait. Let Julie help you lock in the best dates and locations for your session.

How It Works

Your Session, From First Call to Final Gallery

Julie runs point on the entire experience from the moment you reach out. You will never wonder what happens next.

Julie Reaches Out

Within 24 hours of your inquiry, Julie will call or text to learn about you as a couple. What do you like to do together? How comfortable are you on a trail? Are you bringing a dog? This is not a sales pitch. It is how we figure out the right experience for you.

Location and Date Planning

Based on your conversation, Julie sends a short list of locations matched to your fitness level, scenery preferences, and timing. We account for crowd patterns, seasonal conditions, and golden hour angles at each specific trail. You pick the one that excites you most.

Prep and Packing List

You receive a custom prep guide: what to wear for the hike, what to bring for photos, what shoes work on the terrain, and any gear or snacks to pack. No guesswork.

The Adventure

We meet at the trailhead and head out together. I shoot continuously while guiding you through natural moments and simple prompts. No stiff posing. When we hit the summit or the waterfall or the overlook, we slow down for the hero shots. The rest of the time, you just enjoy the hike and each other.

Same-Day Sneak Peeks

Before you leave the trail, I AirDrop a handful of edited previews to your phone. You will have something worth posting before you even get back to the car.

Full Gallery Delivery

Your complete gallery of hand-edited, full-resolution images is delivered within 2 to 3 weeks. Every image is individually color-corrected. No unedited dumps, no filler, no duplicates.

Trail-Tested Location Expertise

We Do Not Google Hikes. We Hike Them.

I have personally been on every trail we recommend, most of them dozens of times. I know where the parking fills up on weekends, which direction the light falls at 6:30pm in October, where the mud gets bad after rain, and which "scenic overlook" on Google Maps is actually a disappointment in person.

This is not information you can get from a photographer who shoots in a studio 48 weeks a year and goes outside for engagement sessions twice a season. It is earned by putting miles on your boots.

Julie and I live in Western North Carolina. We hike for fun. We scout for work. The overlap is the entire point.

Weather Warning

Mountain weather above 5,000 feet changes fast. Julie monitors forecasts starting 5 days out and will communicate any timing adjustments or backup plans well before your session. We have never lost a session to weather. We just adapt.

Meet Your Team

Will + Julie Thomas

We have been photographing couples in Western North Carolina since 2010. Over 750 surprise proposals. Hundreds of engagements, elopements, and weddings across these mountains.

Before Forge Mountain, I spent years as a Google Creative, shooting hotels and properties across North America, South America, and the Caribbean for Google Street View, Google Hotels, and the Trusted Photographer program. That background in visual platforms and search is baked into everything we do, from how we compose an image to how we build the pages you are reading right now.

Julie handles all client communication, planning, and logistics. She is the reason every session runs smoothly, every backup plan is ready, and every couple feels taken care of from the first text to the final gallery.

We are not a volume studio. We take a limited number of sessions each month so every couple gets our full attention.

Common Questions

Adventure Engagement FAQ

Most sessions run 2 to 4 hours, including the hike. Full-day adventure sessions covering multiple locations and activities can run 6 to 8 hours. We will recommend a duration based on the location and experience you want to build.
Wear comfortable hiking shoes for the approach and bring a second outfit for portraits at the summit or overlook. We send a detailed style guide and packing list after booking that is customized for the specific trail and season. Layers are always a good idea at elevation.
Julie monitors the forecast starting 5 days out. Light rain and fog actually create some of the most dramatic mountain photos we have ever taken. For severe storms, we reschedule at no cost or pivot to a protected location like a waterfall alcove, covered overlook, or brewery nearby. We have never lost a session to weather.
Absolutely. Dogs are welcome on most trails we use. We will help you pick a dog-friendly route and suggest timing so your pup stays comfortable. Some of our favorite engagement images include dogs, and we know how to work with them so they look great in photos without it becoming a wrestling match.
For small groups of 5 or fewer people, no commercial photography permit is required on National Forest or National Park Service land under the EXPLORE Act signed into law in 2024. This covers all of our adventure engagement sessions. We handle all logistics so you do not have to think about it.
Yes. We offer vertical video clips optimized for Instagram Reels and TikTok, drone footage (weather permitting), and behind-the-scenes content delivered same-day. Full cinematic highlight reels are available as a premium add-on.
An adventure engagement session is a photography experience, not a ceremony. There are no vows, no officiant, no marriage license. It is a celebration of your relationship in a beautiful setting. If you are considering an adventure elopement, the engagement session is a perfect trial run to see how you work together with us on a trail before committing to your wedding day.
For peak season dates (October, June), we recommend booking 3 to 6 months in advance. Off-peak seasons are more flexible. If you already have us booked for your wedding, we can often fit your engagement session into the calendar with shorter notice.
Sessions start at $800 for a 2-hour trail session and go up to $3,500 for a full-day multi-location adventure with drone, video, and multiple outfit changes. The most popular package is our half-day Ridge Runner at $1,800, which includes drone coverage and vertical video clips. See the full pricing breakdown above or contact Julie for a custom quote.

This Is What We Do
