Corey & Sarah's Black Balsam Knob Proposal

Black Balsam Knob is the kind of place you drive an hour for and then forget every other view you have seen. It sits at over 6,200 feet in Pisgah National Forest, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway near milepost 420, and the summit is a bare grassy bald with the Art Loeb Trail running right along the ridge. No trees blocking the horizon. Just mountains stacked to the edge of everything. Corey picked it for exactly that reason, and I could not have talked him out of it if I tried.

This was a proposal with a mini session added on, so we kept everything close to the summit and let the mountain do the work. Corey wanted an Asheville mountain proposal that felt like an adventure, not a photo studio with a nice backdrop, and Black Balsam gives you that in spades. It is windy, it is wild, and on the right evening you get the whole bald to yourselves. That is what happened here.

A quick note before the good part. If you are reading this because you are thinking about your own Black Balsam proposal, timing and weather up here are everything, and getting the surprise right on an exposed summit takes some planning. Julie worked out the plan with Corey ahead of time, and the timing held. We had the bald nearly to ourselves, the light was soft coming across the ridges, and I set up looking like a hiker photographing the view. When Corey dropped to one knee, Sarah's hands went to her face, and the whole world up there went quiet for a second before she said yes.

Once the ring was on and the nerves wore off, we spent the rest of the evening working the ridge. This is the part of a mountain engagement session I love. Corey and Sarah relaxed into each other, the wind kept things honest, and the light kept getting better. We stayed close to the summit and let the terrain give us variety, the grassy bald, the rock outcrops, and the open drop of the ridgeline behind every frame.
