Scott & Jaci's Craggy Pinnacle Sunset Proposal

A surprise proposal on the west ledge of Craggy Pinnacle a week before fall, for a couple from Naples, Florida, in the kind of light the Craggies only throw at the very ends of the day.

Scott and Jaci came up from Naples, Florida, and Scott had one request: mountains, a sunset, and no audience. That's a shorter list than it sounds. On Craggy Pinnacle there's exactly one spot that answers all three, and it holds one couple.

The west ledge sits off the main trail past a wooden bench, a window of rock about six feet wide between the rhododendron and the blueberry, facing almost due west. I'd been on it that same week with a compass, and Julie had already worked out the timing with Scott: when to leave, where to park, how long the walk would take, and a signal for the moment. My job was to be in the shrubs behind them before they arrived and to look like nobody at all.

What none of us could plan was the sky. The Craggies do something at the ends of the day that only a few places in these mountains do. Max Patch is one. This is the other. When the clouds and the ridges line up, the color goes past anything you'd call tasteful, and it's real. Every frame below is what the mountain looked like that evening, a week before the first day of fall. Not every proposal here looks like this one, and I'd rather say that up front than have you expect it.

The west ledge

The trail up is short and rocky, fifteen minutes at a hiker's pace. Scott and Jaci took it as a sunset walk, which is the easiest cover story in Western North Carolina because it's something people actually do. At the bench they turned right instead of climbing on toward the summit, and the trail flattened out into a sandy path and then into rock and open sky.

I was already there. The rhododendron on this ledge is thick enough to hide a photographer and a camera bag, and the ledge is small enough that I could work close without moving. The plan was that simple. They'd have the ledge, and I'd have the bushes, with the sun about to drop into the window.

02

The question

Scott turned Jaci toward the view, and then he wasn't standing anymore. I shot the sequence from behind the shrubs. She said yes. Then the part I like best about proposals happened, which is the ten seconds where nobody knows what to do with their hands.

The first minutes after yes

Once the shaking stopped I stepped out of the rhododendron and introduced myself. We stayed right on the ledge for the first portraits, because there was nowhere else to go and no reason to want to. The ten minutes after a proposal are the easiest photographs I make all year. Everybody is still a little stunned, and it shows.

The light the Craggies throw

We had a short window, one small piece of rock, and light that swung between full shade and sunbursts with nothing in between. The sun was low and straight down the ledge's window, which in mid-September puts it dead center. I shot straight into it and let the sky do the rest.

These colors are exaggerated by the hour, and they're also true. I've photographed in a lot of places and there are only a handful where the clouds and the mountains combine to do this. Craggy at sunset is one. Craggy at sunrise on an inversion morning is another. If you come here at either end of the day and the sky cooperates, this is what you get. If it doesn't, you get something quieter and just as good, and we'll talk you through both on the planning call.

Early fall on the Parkway

This was the second week of September, a week short of the equinox, which up here counts as the front edge of fall. The mountain ash along the trail was already carrying red berries, the first color was starting in the high hardwoods, and the air had that cool, clear high-pressure feel that brings the inversions back. At 5,900 feet, fall arrives two or three weeks ahead of Asheville, and the light gets longer and lower every evening from here into October.

For a couple coming up from sea level in Florida, it was also about fifteen degrees cooler than they'd dressed for once the sun went. Julie warns everyone about this, and everyone is surprised anyway.

Portraits as the sun dropped

We had maybe twenty minutes of usable light after the proposal, and we used every one of them on the same six feet of rock. A lift, a laugh, the ring, the two of them small against the ridges. I gave them very few directions. When the sun finally went behind the ridge we packed up and walked down with headlamps, talking the whole way.

Congratulations, Scott and Jaci. Thank you for making the drive up from Naples, for trusting us with a moment you only get once, and for standing on a six-foot piece of rock like you'd been there all your lives. Come back for the fall color.
